Colombian centenarians show unique immunosenescence patterns tied to biological age

A comprehensive study of Colombian centenarians has mapped their immunosenescence profiles, revealing how immune aging differs in people who live past 100. The research, published in npj aging, examined immune markers and biological age indicators in this exceptional population. The findings show that centenarians exhibit distinct patterns of immune system aging that correlate more closely with biological age measures than with chronological age alone. Importantly, these individuals appear to have avoided or delayed the severe immune decline typically seen in elderly populations. The study identified specific immunosenescence signatures—including patterns of T cell exhaustion, inflammatory markers, and immune cell populations—that distinguish successful agers from those with typical aging trajectories.
