Restoring calcium balance extends lifespan and healthspan in progeria and normal aging

Researchers have demonstrated that calcium homeostasis—the cell's ability to regulate calcium levels—deteriorates with age and may be a key driver of aging pathology. In this study published in Nature Communications, scientists used both progeroid mice (which age rapidly due to genetic defects) and naturally aged mice to test whether restoring calcium balance could improve health and lifespan. The intervention successfully extended lifespan and improved multiple healthspan markers in both groups. This matters because calcium dysregulation has been linked to numerous age-related diseases, from neurodegeneration to muscle dysfunction, but had not been directly tested as a therapeutic target for aging itself. The work is particularly notable for showing benefits in both accelerated-aging models and normal aging, suggesting the mechanism may be broadly relevant.
