First Microprotein Atlas of Human Brain Reveals New Alzheimer's Disease Targets

Researchers have created the first comprehensive atlas of microproteins—tiny proteins encoded by genes previously thought not to produce functional proteins—in the human frontal cortex, with specific attention to Alzheimer's disease. Published in Nature Aging, this work opens up an entirely new dimension of brain biology that's been hiding in plain sight. Microproteins are challenging to detect with standard methods, so their roles in health and disease have been largely unknown. The atlas identifies which microproteins are present in healthy versus Alzheimer's-affected brains, potentially revealing new disease mechanisms and therapeutic targets that don't exist in our current treatment paradigm. This matters because Alzheimer's drug development has historically focused on a narrow set of targets (amyloid, tau) with limited success.
