Common Blood Pressure Drug Reverses Cellular Aging in Blood Vessel Walls

Researchers discovered that nebivolol, a common blood pressure medication, does more than lower hypertension—it appears to reverse cellular aging in the endothelial cells lining blood vessels. The study found that nebivolol treatment reduced markers of cellular senescence and normalized mitochondrial function by interfering with TGF-β1, a signaling molecule that promotes aging in vascular cells. This matters because endothelial senescence is a key driver of cardiovascular aging and many age-related diseases. The fact that an already-approved, widely-used drug shows anti-aging effects in human cells is particularly significant. While this study was conducted on cultured cells rather than living patients, it provides mechanistic insight into why nebivolol might offer cardiovascular benefits beyond simple blood pressure reduction. The findings suggest that some patients already taking nebivolol for hypertension might be getting unintentional anti-aging benefits. However, clinical trials would be needed to confirm whether these cellular effects translate to measurable health or longevity improvements in humans. The research adds to growing evidence that repurposing existing medications could be a faster path to practical anti-aging interventions than developing entirely new drugs.
