Boosting Brain Cell Birth Clears Amyloid and Restores Memory in Alzheimer's Mice

Researchers demonstrated that stimulating the birth of new neurons (neurogenesis) in adult mice can improve both brain pathology and memory in an Alzheimer's disease model. By activating AMPK signaling—a master metabolic regulator often targeted by interventions like metformin and exercise—the team increased production of new neurons in the hippocampus, a region critical for learning and memory. Remarkably, enhanced neurogenesis not only improved cognitive performance but also reduced amyloid-β plaques, the toxic protein aggregates that define Alzheimer's disease. This suggests newly born neurons may help clear existing pathology, not just compensate for lost function. While the findings are promising, they come from mice and require validation in human tissue and clinical trials. Still, the results strengthen the case that interventions promoting neurogenesis—whether pharmacological, lifestyle-based, or both—could form part of a multi-pronged strategy against age-related cognitive decline. The AMPK pathway's accessibility via existing compounds makes this avenue particularly translatable, though we await human proof-of-concept studies.
