Loss of Y Chromosome Linked to Peripheral Artery and Aortic Disease Risk
As men age, many lose the Y chromosome from a fraction of their blood cells, a phenomenon called mosaic loss of Y (mLOY). This new study links mLOY to elevated risk of peripheral arterial disease and aortic conditions, adding to growing evidence that this chromosomal change isn't benign. Previous research connected mLOY to heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's risk, but the mechanisms remained unclear. The current findings suggest mLOY may promote vascular inflammation and dysfunction through altered immune cell behavior. What's compelling is that mLOY is detectable through simple blood tests and affects 10-40% of older men depending on age. Unlike most genetic risk factors you're born with, mLOY develops over time and appears influenced by lifestyle factors like smoking. While we can't yet prevent or reverse mLOY clinically, identifying it could help stratify cardiovascular risk more accurately in older men. The real promise lies in understanding why losing this chromosome affects immune function—insights that might lead to interventions targeting the downstream inflammatory processes rather than the chromosome loss itself.
