Brain scans reveal older adults age at dramatically different cortical rates
A new longitudinal imaging study has found that healthy older adults can be grouped into distinct clusters based on how quickly their cortex thins over time. Rather than everyone aging at the same pace, researchers identified different trajectories of cortical change—some people's brains age faster than others even without disease. This challenges the one-size-fits-all model of brain aging and suggests we need personalized approaches to cognitive health. The findings could help identify individuals at higher risk for accelerated cognitive decline earlier, allowing for targeted interventions. Understanding why some brains age more gracefully than others may also reveal protective factors that could be harnessed therapeutically. While the study focused on structural brain changes rather than functional outcomes, the different aging rates likely correlate with varying cognitive trajectories. This work reinforces that chronological age is an imperfect proxy for biological age, especially in the brain.
