TMAO Linked to Brain Degeneration and Cardiometabolic Risk in Healthy Elderly Adults
Trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO) has emerged as a potential blood biomarker of aging and disease risk. This study examined healthy elderly adults and found that higher TMAO levels were associated with older age, worse cardiometabolic profiles, and degenerative changes in brain structure. TMAO is produced when gut bacteria break down nutrients like choline and carnitine, which are abundant in red meat, eggs, and dairy. The findings suggest TMAO may be more than just a marker—it could actively contribute to age-related decline. This builds on prior research linking TMAO to cardiovascular disease, kidney dysfunction, and mortality. The study's focus on ostensibly healthy older adults is particularly noteworthy, as it suggests TMAO accumulation may be part of normal aging rather than a consequence of existing disease. For practical application, this reinforces dietary advice to limit TMAO-generating foods and potentially supports interventions targeting the gut microbiome. However, more work is needed to establish whether lowering TMAO through diet or other means actually slows brain aging or reduces disease risk in humans.
